At Smile Republic we realize that bad breath, or Halitosis. This is an acutely embarrassing affliction for many people, indeed up to 80 million people worldwide struggle with this problem. It is a condition that can stifle your interaction with other people and have a negative impact on your social life and self-confidence. The condition can materialize in numerous forms and can be attributed to a number of different causes. Halitosis is most commonly caused by the lack of adequate dental hygiene or because deposits of food have become stuck in and around the teeth. A result of this bad breath which is caused by the harboring of volatile sulfur compounds, in particular methylmercaptan and hydrogen sulfide. In our mouths we have millions of living bacteria, they exist on the gums, on the tongue and all this bacteria can cause unpleasant breath. Unwanted odors emanating from the mouth can be apparent periodically, or be a continual affliction, this may be dependent on the cause. |
|
Our clients are often aware and perplexed by the fact that they have his vexing problem. The derivation of bad breath can be viewed as having three main areas, external, intraoral, and extraoral. Whichever is the origin of the condition, your first and most important decision is to visit our experts at Smile Republic where we can assess your individual condition then a full diagnosis can be completed, it may be that gum disease is found to be present. If this is the case we can then draw up an individual treatment plan for you and our Periodontist can treat the problem directly and give the appropriate expert advice as to how you should combat this extremely common source of personal and social embarrassment. |

Why is saliva so important in combating bad breath? :
Saliva is the key ingredient in your mouth that helps keep the odor under control because it helps wash away food particles and bacteria, the primary cause of bad breath. When you sleep, however, salivary glands slow down the production of saliva, allowing the bacteria to grow inside the mouth. To alleviate ‘morning mouth,’ brush your teeth and eat a morning meal. Morning mouth also is associated with hunger or fasting. Those who skip breakfast, beware, because the odor may reappear even if you've brushed your teeth. |
|
Possible intraoral causes for bad breath (halitosis) :
Without effective and consistent cleaning and flossing of your teeth and mouth food remains can easily linger and lead to problems. Food particles that are allowed to collect on the teeth, gums, and on the tongue can often become the cause of decay, which will very often cause an odorous emanation which is both unpleasant and socially offensive, as well as being exceedingly embarrassing for the sufferer. |
|
Improper cleaning of dentures. |
If you wear dentures that are not cleaned properly it is possible they can become a collecting ground for bacteria, and due to lingering food particles which break down and decompose, will cause bad breath. Our Smile Republic experts can give authoritative advice to help our clients to combat this embarrassing condition. |
|
Periodontal (Gum) Disease. |
Gum disease, such as Gingivitis is another common cause of bad breath, as is Xerostomia (dry mouth). These conditions can easily be treated by our experts, thus freeing you from the embarrassment of bad breath. |
|
Prescription drugs.
Numerous prescription drugs can contribute to poor mouth odor. Antihistamines, antidepressants, drugs to treat angina or high blood pressure can all lead to unpleasant oral odor. At Smile Republic we can advise our clients on preventative actions that can be taken to curb the problem.
Tobacco products.
We all know that tobacco products are detrimental to our health. The negative effects of these products are equally threatening to our oral health. Cigarettes and cigars are an obvious danger, but other products such as snuff, chewing tobacco and even smokeless products all represent a threat to our oral health. Tobacco products will also contribute to the symptoms of bad breath as well as the negatively visual impact that stained and discolored teeth can have.

Treatment for Halitosis.
Our experts will ascertain the specific treatment that a client requires for halitosis based factors such as:
• The overall health of your mouth
• The origins and causes of existing conditions
• The level of severity of any condition
• A client’s tolerance towards certain medications and procedural techniques
• Our clients own preferences towards Air Flow Cleaning and Prophylaxis
At Smile Republic we utilize a prophylaxis air flow cleaning procedure where we combine air, water and sodium bicarbonate in a powerful jet which quickly and efficiently remove staining and plaque with no discomfort to our clients. This is by far and away more effective than other more traditional methods, such as polishing strips, pastes and rubber cups. Even in very difficult to reach areas this procedure has dynamic results in the removal of plaque and stains. |
